Chapter 4: Might as well kick out the prince for now

Lin Tianyin couldn’t believe her eyes. The sky was practically raining blood and guts, and Miller Jr. who was perfectly healthy moments ago was now tossed down as mere skeleton by those monstrous birds. His remains crumbled into a pile of bones.

Since the scene was so horrifying, after a brief moment of silence, Milona clutched her head in terror and screamed.

“Ahhhhh—!!”

There was no sign that the monstrous birds were going to disperse. Lin Tianyin bit her lip, and her entire body was shaking with fear. This wasn’t a movie or a game. She was truly living and breathing in this world, and a human being was just killed by monsters right in front of her eyes.

“Damn you brutes!”

Gagaf prepared to shoot an arrow into the sky. Lin Tianyin despaired as she saw this, as it was useless. That guy couldn’t even shoot a rabbit! At this rate, they were all going to die before the story even started! Milona! Please use your Mary Sue aura to summon some men to come to rescue them!

However, no miracle came to pass. Gagaf didn’t hit anything, and a Bluehead Eagle swooped towards them from the air. Milona once again clutched her head and crouched down. Lin Tianyin glanced at her two useless companions and gritted her teeth. Desperately, she launched her fist straight at the flying monster that was flying towards her with its mouth open.

The monstrous bird was quite agile, and it abruptly pulled up the moment Lin Tianyin released her punch, causing her fist to strike empty air. Meanwhile, Milona’s voice cried out from behind, “Watch out!”

Lin Tianyin recovered her senses, but she was a step too slow. Another Bluehead Eagle dived from behind her, and it reached for Lin Tianyin’s shoulders with its sharp talons as if claiming its quarry.

Gagaf quickly re-aimed his bow at Lin Tianyin, but the Bluehead Eagle that gripped Lin Tianyin flapped its wings a few times. It was unable to fly.

Milona and Gagaf were stunned. There was only one reason that this had happened — the prey was too heavy, and the monstrous bird couldn’t fly carrying her!

The flying monster continued to flap its wings frantically, but no matter how hard it tried, it couldn’t lift the giant body a single inch. This spectacle immediately made Lin Tianyin feel terribly insulted. Upset and indignant, she grabbed the monstrous bird’s foot in a rage, threw it to the ground, and punched it.

“Thump—”

There was a heavy sound of the target being struck as her fist landed on the abdomen of the flying monster. Blood spurted over Lin Tianyin’s face, and its chunky guts exploded onto the ground like a cannon. Milona and Gagaf’s jaws immediately dropped — was this the power of their nameless village hero?!

“…I won’t lose either! I’ll avenge you Miller Jr.!”

Lin Tianyin’s iron fist seemed to have awakened Gagaf, as if something clicked inside of him. He drew his bow again.

“The biggest one seems to be their leader!” Gagaf shouted, “I’ll definitely shoot it down!”

“You can do it, Gagaf!” Milona pumped her fists on the side in encouragement, as if placing all of her hopes on Gagaf. It was exactly as one might expect from a Mary Sue protagonist — she only knew how to be a cheerleader.

Lin Tianyin actually had zero expectations for this useless villager who never brought home any game. She was still trying to think of a way to get rid of these monster birds. However, a miracle happened. As Gagaf released the bowstring, the arrow flew straight and true. It struck the eyes of the Bluehead Eagle leader.

“Squawk—!”

That enormous monster bird made a terrible cry, flapped a few times, and then plummeted from the air. The three of them froze as they watched this, but then everyone charged forward in unison. They surrounded the enormous monstrous bird and started punching and kicking it.

“There’s an opening!”

“Hiyaaaaaaa—!!”

The Bluehead Eagle’s head was still covered in scales, but it quickly died under the brutal beating of the three adventurers. The Bluehead Eagles flapped a few times in the air after losing their leader, but then quickly scattered in different directions. The mountain valley that was chock full with bloodlust thus finally quieted down. The three of them panted heavily, still unable to process everything that had just happened.

“Miller Jr. died… should we take his bones back?” Milona looked at Lin Tianyin anxiously, as if waiting for her decision.

“No, we can’t go back. If Mr. Miller found out that his son died, he’ll definitely have a heart attack.” In truth, Lin Tianyin didn’t want to walk all the way back to the village, so she came up with a poor excuse. “Let’s bury him. Miller Jr. wouldn’t have wanted his father to know that he died so quickly… so let us honor Miller Jr.’s bravery and ultimate sacrifice!”1

“Wahh… Poor Miller Jr….”

Milona was moved to tears by Lin Tianyin’s speech. Gagaf also nodded in agreement: “Right, we should not despair. We will defeat the demon lord and avenge Miller Jr.!”

Although this incident technically wasn’t the demon lord’s fault, somehow he was still blamed for it. In either case, their adventure had only just begun, yet the only member of their party wielding a sword had already died… Since Lin Tianyin did not know Miller Jr. very well, she did not feel particularly sad. After the three of them dug a hole to bury Miller Jr., they turned their attention back to the Bluehead Eagle.

Milona swallowed nervously, her eyes glimmered suspiciously.

“I heard that Bluehead Eagle feathers can be used to make high-level equipment, and can be sold for a lot of money in the market…”

Gagaf seemed conflicted by this revelation: “Are we… really going to…?”

“Well of course, if that’s the case, what are we waiting for?!” Lin Tianyin rolled up her sleeves, and thus the three of them scrambled forward and cleanly plucked the dead Bluehead Eagle bare.

After collecting a pile of loot and pushing aside the boulder, the three adventurers continued down the road. Milon and Gagaf were melancholy after losing a teammate, and nobody spoke the entire way. They were not attacked by any monsters or wild animals as they climbed the mountains, perhaps because they were covered in the stench of Bluehead Eagles. However, Lin Tianyin soon began to feel hungry. She had used up a lot of energy after that brutal battle, so when they reached the mountain summit, she couldn’t resist any longer and called out to her two somber companions.

“Should we eat something and then go?”

After hearing Lin Tianyin’s suggestion, the two of them hesitated. They looked at Lin Tianyin awkwardly and answered: “It takes a whole day to walk from our village to the next town, and we only brought one meal. If we eat now, we’ll be hungry the rest of the way, so can’t we wait a little longer? We won’t have any energy left to go down the mountain.”

“…”

But Lin Tianyin was already running out of strength to walk, so in spite of her two companion’s protests, Lin Tianyin sat down below a tree and untied the sack that she was carrying. However, when she placed it on the ground, she suddenly heard some rustling in the tree above her. Lin Tianyin looked up suspiciously. Without warning, a monkey nimbly jumped out of the tree, grabbed the sack on the ground and ran.

The three adventurers stared for a moment, and then finally reacted.

Aside from their boxed lunches, the recovery magic scroll was still in that sack!!

“That thief—!!”

Lin Tianyin broke into a run after the monkey, while Milona and Gagaf followed in close pursuit. However, the monkey was exceptionally agile, and it ran so fast that the distance between them grew wider and wider. Panting for breath, Lin Tianyin shouted back towards Gagaf: “H-Hurry! Shoot that monkey down!”

“I can’t do that.” Gagaf shook his head and refused. “I will not harm innocent animals.”

“You call stealing our stuff innocent?!” Lin Tianyin exploded in fury. “Don’t tell me you never brought back any prey because you didn’t want to hurt them?!”

Despite Lin Tianyin’s angry outburst, Gagaf was only slightly startled. He smiled embarrassingly and responded: “I guess so, although I didn’t want anyone to know.”

“…”

Lin Tianyin’s eyes twitched. Milona, who also heard him, immediately looked at Gagaf full of admiration: “Wow… you’re a really honorable person.”

You’re not helping!!

Lin Tianyin grumbled silently. Why weren’t there any normal people around her? The worst part was that they had no idea where that stupid monkey who stole their bag went. The money and other stuff in the sack wasn’t a big deal, but losing the greater recovery scroll would be extremely troublesome. Regardless, they needed to catch that monkey.

Damn it, was there really no way…?

After losing sight of the monkey entirely, the three of them stopped. Lin Tianyin seemed the most upset. Milona worriedly asked Gagaf: “Is it really hopeless?”

“Not necessarily.” Gagaf caught his breath and looked at the town that was starting to become visible at the foot of the mountain. “I think that monkey is someone’s pet. There was a red string tied around its neck, which may mean it was trained to go into the mountains to steal things from travelers.”

“That’s a shitty thing to do!” Lin Tianyin angrily stopped her feet. “That thief must be caught! No, vagabond!2

“We can look for clues in the nearby town first,” Gagaf analyzed. “The monkey’s master must have a way to sell stolen goods, so he likely has some connections with the local black market. There will definitely be someone in town who knows about it.”

“Oh… “ Lin Tianyin thought that Gagaf’s words made sense. This villager was smarter than she thought. She looked at Gagaf again, and this young man with short blue hair looked somewhat dependable. Although he was never mentioned in the original work, continuing their journey with him might be okay…

Even if there was no prince and they had nothing to do with the original cast of characters, maybe they’d still be able to defeat the demon lord?

Thinking about it carefully, it wasn’t impossible. If they could find someone who could use a sword, they could kick the prince out of their party entirely. Lin Tianyin saw a flash of hope for the future, and she decided to go to the next town. There, they could search for a new teammate, and at least someone to fill Miller Jr.’s spot…

Author’s notes:

This really is like a hot-headed shounen adventure (please feed me moar comments!)

Thank you little angels for the support =3=

The prince and the others will appear in a few chapters, but who knows where the plot will take Brother Yu…3

By the way, a friendly reminder that this work is rated 16+.

Even though it’s light-hearted, there are some heavy parts so be warned~

Translator’s notes:

  1. This is somewhat loosely translated. The literal translation is “let’s work hard like Miller Jr.”, but the meaning here is that Lin Tianyin gave a very cheesy speech.
  2. Lin Tianyin corrects herself to using a term for a more serious thief, as opposed to a petty thief. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to translate this as pickpocket => thief.
  3. The author often refers to themselves as Brother Yu (鱼哥), which is literally “Fish Brother”. That said, I’m fairly sure the author is female. There is actually an interview with her online, and she’s apparently a gamer girl who writes web novels on the side.
